Lynwood’s Arevalo Cramming a Lot In

The three-sport athlete is no longer common in high school sports, but Lynwood’s Ezequiel Arevalo is doing plenty to keep the tradition alive.

Arevalo, a 5-foot-8, 180-pound senior, was an all-league kicker in football, the most valuable player of the San Gabriel Valley League in soccer last season and starts at third base for the baseball team. He also carries a 3.7 grade-point average.

Last week, Arevalo scored five goals in a victory over West Covina and five more in a win over Bellflower. On Tuesday, he had two goals for the Knights, who improved to 10-0-1 overall with a 3-0 victory over Paramount in the league opener for both teams.

Arevalo has scored 22 goals this season.

Loyola is generally regarded as a football power, but the Cubs might be the biggest surprise of the boys’ basketball season.

On Monday, Loyola improved to 12-5 overall and 3-0 in the Mission League with a 69-64 victory over previously unbeaten Harvard-Westlake, the two-time defending state Division III champion. Loyola’s victory ended Harvard-Westlake’s 27-game Mission League winning streak.

“A couple of kids have stepped up and done a pretty good job,” said Loyola Coach Alex Acosta, who is in his second season at the school after coaching nine years at La Puente Bishop Amat. “The other kids are feeding off that and also playing well.”

The Cubs, who last won a league title in 1994 when UCLA guard Toby Bailey was at Loyola, have been led by senior forward Robert Archer and sophomore guard Ryan Mollins.

Fontana A.B. Miller High on Monday will be the site of a girls’ basketball doubleheader matching two City Section programs against two Southern Section schools.

Washington will play Paloma Valley at 2:30 p.m., followed by Palisades vs. Fontana at 4:30.
