Coaches Provided Calabasas Boys With the Razor’s Edge

Calabasas boys’ basketball Coach Bill Bellatty and assistant coach Ted Green had their heads shaved by players after the Coyotes beat Santa Clara last week.

Bellatty, coach for 11 years, has had a standing bet that the first Calabasas team to beat Santa Clara would get to give him a haircut.

His wife tried to prevent the shaving.

“She went down and tried to talk them out of it,” he said.

Calabasas (9-9, 3-2 in league play) has been a surprise team this season in the Frontier League.

Dallas Enoch, who played quarterback on the football team, came off the bench to score 16 points earlier this week in an upset of Moorpark.

The Coyotes lost their best player, Spencer Harriton, to a broken ankle suffered in practice Monday.

Overrated: Boys’ soccer Coach Rob Looyen of Simi Valley began the season, his second, with unbridled optimism and predictions of a Marmonte League championship. He’s headed down its backstretch with a slumping team and an uncertain future.

The Pioneers (9-7-1, 2-5-1) were the preseason favorite of league coaches after finishing second last season. But a shiny nonleague record gave way to disaster in league play.

Things have gotten so bad that Looyen discusses the season in the past tense and grasps at the possibility of a victory Monday over longtime Marmonte doormat Channel Islands.

“I thought we were skilled but I guess we just didn’t have the right combination of skills and size and maybe we’re missing a forward to score,” Looyen said.

The league’s top three teams make the Southern Section playoffs. Looyen believes the Pioneers have not missed the postseason in more than seven years.

With players, parents and boosters unhappy with his coaching, the end of that streak may be the end of Looyen directing the program.

“I’m not sure what the future holds,” Looyen said. “I’ll make a decision after the season. But I’m Public Enemy No. 1 with the parents and [alumni] right now.”
