Glendale Girls Are Too Loud for Harvard-Westlake, 45-36

Glendale High could make some real noise in the Pacific League girls’ basketball race next season.

But on Tuesday, the Dynamiters were quiet, giving Coach Jerry Mike the silent treatment before their Burroughs summer league game against defending champion Harvard-Westlake.

Mike had given them a tongue-lashing 24 hours earlier after a lackluster performance in a Canyon summer league game.

But Glendale’s on-court performance spoke volumes. The Dynamiters defeated Harvard-Westlake, 45-36, to win their seventh consecutive summer game.

“They’re capable of that and a lot more,” said Mike, whose team figures to challenge perennial powers Crescenta Valley and Muir for the league title. “I just wish they would talk to me a little more.”

Evette Petrosian scored 18 points for Glendale, while Omelogo Udeze scored 14 for the Wolverines.

Harvard-Westlake, which won the Southern Section Division III-A title last season, played without forward Rolake Bamgbose and guards Brooke Porter and L’Tanya Robnett, who left after the Wolverines’ 56-18 rout of Reseda earlier in the day.

Bamgbose scored 14 points while playing only in the first half of that game.

North Hollywood Coach Rich Allen has bad news for any Valley Pac-8 Conference teams that have been hearing the rumor that Times All-Valley forward Markia Derby is set to transfer.

Derby has missed the Huskies’ first six summer games.

“The reason she hasn’t been playing is because she is in North Carolina, staying with her father,” Allen said. “As far as I know, she’s still coming back.”

Playing without Derby, All-City guard Tashean Thomas and sophomore post player Rishelle Sherman, North Hollywood lost to Burroughs, 33-31, in overtime and has a 4-2 record during the summer.

Burroughs is 1-8 but Coach Doug Nicol isn’t about to panic.

The Indians lost nine players to graduation and 6-foot-1 sophomore center Kim Curtain broke her foot in the first summer game.

“We have talent, but it’s young and it needs to learn the varsity level of basketball,” Nicol said.

Hoover was winless in the Pacific League last season, but that figures to change with the development of junior guards Razan Ezzeddin and Tene Hartounian.

Each scored 12 points in a 43-42 loss to La Canada on Tuesday.

“Ezzeddin may be one of the best players in the league this year,” one coach said.

Sierra Hauser-Price has developed into one of the region’s best all-around athletes.

Notre Dame’s sophomore-to-be scored 15 points in the Knights’ 60-17 victory over Bell-Jeff.

During the spring, she qualified for the state track finals in the 100 meters and 200 meters, and on the 1,600-meter relay.

Last winter, Hauser-Price was a second-team All-Valley selection by The Times in basketball.

Last week she advanced to the final of a one-on-one competition at the UC Santa Barbara camp.
