Matadors Honored for Academic Skills

Cal State Northridge had 19 athletes selected to the Big Sky Conference Spring All-Academic teams.

Athletes must have competed in at least half of the team’s competitions and carried a 3.2 grade-point average during the previous year or during their collegiate career.

The honorees from the women’s tennis team were Shaheen Bhanji, Isabella Peintner and Kendra Segura.

Recognized on the men’s outdoor track team were Anthony Colson, John Greene, Nick Hamlin, Brad Hegemier, Javier Ramirez and Oswaldo Servin.

Selected from the women’s outdoor track team were Jennifer Capehart, Margo Hammerstrom, Cheree Hicks, Nancy James, Amy Meyers, Erin Nichols, Jennifer Overlock, Gudrun Skuladottir, Jamie Whitmore and Desiree Woodman.

BASEBALL

Infielder Kevin Howard of Westlake High, pitcher Ryan Ayers of Newbury Park and pitcher Chris Cordeiro of Thousand Oaks made the Cincinnati Reds area code team after a tryout Wednesday in Bakersfield.

Howard, who will be a senior, played in the area code games last summer. Ayers, who will be a senior, and Cordeiro, who will be a junior, were among nine pitchers chosen from 40 who tried out.

Applications are being accepted for soccer camps held through Aug. 21 in Thousand Oaks, Camarillo and Westlake Village. An elite camp, from Aug. 2-6, is designed for training for top players. Information: (805) 492-4153.

Two five-day sessions of the Lancers Boys’ Basketball Camp for third- through eighth-graders are offered Monday through Friday and July 13-July 17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m at Thousand Oaks High.

Cost of the camp, which will be run by former Thousand Oaks High boys’ coach Ed Chevalier, is $75 per session or $140 for both sessions.

Five-day sessions of the Panther Boys’ Basketball Camp for ages 8 through 13 are scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and July 13-July 17 at Newbury Park High.

The camp will be directed by Newbury Park boys’ basketball Coach Steve Johnson. Cost is $65 per session.

The Master’s College will host a pair of volleyball camps for middle school and high school boys and girls from July 20-23 and from July 27-30.

The Kids of Courage Sports Academy summer soccer camp for boys and girls ages 5 through 17 is being offered Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sol Del Valle Community Center in Sun Valley. Cost is $100.

The academy also will offer four sessions of a baseball camp for ages 7 through 12. Cost is $120 per session.

The first session is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 13-July 17, followed by others July 20-July 24, Aug. 3-7 and Aug. 10-14.

A softball camp for girls ages 7 through 17 will run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 17-21 and Aug. 24-28. Cost is $90 per week.

Sessions of The Master’s College summer basketball camp for boys and girls ages 7 through 16 are scheduled for July 13-16 and Aug. 3-6 at The Master’s.

Emphasis of instruction by Master’s men’s basketball Coach Bill Oates will be on fundamentals, including passing, dribbling, rebounding, defense and shooting. Three-on-three play, skills competition and daily games will be featured.

New San Fernando Valley-area based chapters of National Junior Basketball are being started for this season.

NJB is an organization for third- through eighth-graders that has approximately 200 chapters in 10 states.

Late registration is underway for a beginning golf class for adults at the Conejo Recreation and Park District sports office.

The office is at 2522 Pleasant Way, in Thousand Oaks. Sign-ups are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The class, for ages 16 and older, is Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. July 9 through Aug. 13 at Los Robles Golf Course’s driving range. Cost is $48.

Other programs also are offered.

Beginning and intermediate group tennis lessons take place Mondays through Thursdays and Saturdays at several locations. Instruction is at Triunfo, Borchard and Thousand Oaks Community parks, as well as Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park high schools and North Ranch and Wildflower play fields.

Cost of beginners’ instruction is $33; intermediate classes are $46.

Daily and weekly Red Cross swim instruction is offered at Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks high schools for all ages. Cost ranges from $30 to $82.

The Dean Bradshaw basketball camp will be held Monday through Friday at the Rancho Santa Susana Recreation Center Gym in Simi Valley.

The session will last from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. daily and is open to boys in grades 3-8.
