AROUND THE LEAGUES

When Modesto right fielder Jeff DaVanon hit for the cycle against Lancaster last week, it marked the third year in a row a player from the Oakland Athletics’ organization accomplished the feat.

Last year Ryan Christenson (Pepperdine) of Visalia did it against San Bernardino and in 1996 it was David Newhan (Pepperdine) of Modesto against San Jose. They are the only three California League players to hit for the cycle in the past three years.

Jon Tucker (Chatsworth, Alemany) had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for San Antonio. . . . JETHAWKS

Justin Kaye, a dominant closer with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Seattle Mariners’ lower Class-A affiliate, joined the JetHawks on Friday. Kaye was 6-2 with nine saves and a 1.71 earned-run average at Wisconsin. Lindsay Gulin, 2-2 with a 5.83 ERA at Lancaster, was sent to Wisconsin.

Also Friday, JetHawks’ second baseman Joel Ramirez was promoted to Orlando in the double-A Southern League. Ramirez batted .271 with three home runs in 144 at-bats for Lancaster.

Earlier in the week, JetHawks’ second baseman Adonis Harrison, a Cal League all-star batting .337 with 24 stolen bases, and pitchers Cam Smith (1-1 2.50), Kevin Gryboski (1-3, 3.75, two saves) and Aaron Scheffer (2-2, 3.14, 10 saves) were promoted to Orlando.

Infielder Chris Dean (.197) and pitchers Geronimo Newton (4-1, 5.53) and Pete Janicki (0-1, 10.80) were sent from Orlando to Lancaster. Dean played at Lancaster in each of the last two seasons. Janicki, 27, was the Angels’ first-round pick in 1992 but never reached the major leagues and was released by Anaheim last fall.
