A 22-year-old Thousand Oaks man was hurt early Wednesday after losing control of his motorcycle and smashing into a parking space sign, police said.

Brandan Anthony Carter was in serious but stable condition at Los Robles Regional Medical Center after the 2 a.m. crash in the 1600 block of Thousand Oaks Boulevard, Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy John Popp said.

Hospital spokeswoman Kris Carraway-Bowman said Carter fractured his back.

Carter was reportedly speeding west on Thousand Oaks Boulevard when he attempted to turn north onto Erbes Road, lost control and was thrown from his 1993 Kawasaki, Popp said.

The motorcycle struck a business sign and came to rest in a driveway at 1655 Thousand Oaks Blvd. while Carter slid down a sidewalk before slamming into the handicapped parking sign, Popp said. Alcohol is believed to be a factor, he said.

Carter was not wearing a helmet, Popp said.
