Irvine Valley Hires Hanks to Coach Basketball

Julie Hanks has been hired as women’s basketball coach at Irvine Valley, the school said Friday. Hanks replaces Eric Bangs, who will resume coaching duties at Woodbridge High this fall.

Hanks, 34, coached at Grand Canyon, an NCAA Division II school, for four years. A 5-foot-10 point guard, she took last season off to play for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and professionally in Switzerland.

Hanks played four years at Northern Arizona and was elected into the school’s hall of fame in 1994. She previously coached two years at Phoenix College and was a part-time coach at Citrus and Mt. San Antonio colleges.

Former Cerritos High coach Harold Eggers has been hired as football coach at Ocean View High, the school announced. He replaces Ron Vander Sluis, who resigned to take a similar position at Rowland Heights Rowland. Vander Sluis was 3-17 in two seasons.

Eggers is the third Seahawk football coach in the last four years. Ocean View is 6-24 in that time.

Former Southern California College baseball players Bryce Primm, Kevin Moore and Joe Rivera have signed to play for independent baseball teams, according to SCC Coach Kevin Kasper.

Primm, a right-hander pitcher, signed with the Vigilantes. Primm was 7-5 with a 3.51 ERA for SCC this season. Moore, an outfielder who hit .393 with seven homers at SCC, will play for Nashua (N.H.) of the Atlantic League. Rivera, an outfielder who hit .283 this season, signed with Kalamazoo (Mich.) of the Frontier League.

Surf City of Huntington Beach won the 14-and-under title at the U.S. Junior National Volleyball championships in Dallas by beating Torrimar of San Juan, Puerto Rico, 15-11, 15-9. Brian Gaeta led Surf City with 10 kills in the final match. Cliff Simmons had eight.
