Bohannons Advance in Tournament

Brothers Dave and Dan Bohannon, who on Monday won the doubles title at the National 45 Hardcourt Championships, advanced to the round of 16 in singles competition Tuesday at the USTA National 50 Hardcourt Championships at Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Dave Bohannon of Garden Grove, seeded third, defeated David Seiff of Saratoga, 6-2, 6-1. Dan Bohannon of Orange, who’s seeded sixth, defeated Mike Locklin of Huntington Beach, 6-1, 6-1.

The U.S. Junior Water Polo team, tuning up for the Pan American Junior championships in Havana, defeated France, 14-7, in San Diego. Kyle Baumgarner of Villa Park High and Matt Flesher of Brea Olinda each scored a goal.

The best women’s professional beach volleyball players will make the summer’s only Orange County stop Friday, just south of the Huntington Beach pier.

The Op Best of the Beach invitation-only tournament is a three-day round-robin competition among the top 14 ranked players. The players will continually change partners in an attempt to accumulate overall points based on number of games won.

Participants include Lisa Arce, Linda Hanley, Barbara Fontana, Holly McPeak, Nancy Reno, Angela Rock and Elaine Youngs.

Prize money is $100,000. Play will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

General admission seating in the 2,500-seat stadium is free.

Orange County will be well represented at the 1998 San Diego Surf Cup soccer tournament, July 24-26 and July 30-Aug. 2 at the San Diego Polo Club in Del Mar.

Competition will include 324 teams from throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
