Club Pros Holtby, Lehmann Advance

Paul Holtby of Thousand Oaks finished fourth and Ted Lehmann of Westlake Village was 18th on Wednesday in Southern California section qualifying for the PGA Club Professional Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club in Temecula.

Holtby had a 36-hole score of 143. Lehmann had a 147.

The top 23 players advanced to the Western Region qualifier Oct. 14-17 at Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore.

Anne Lee of Northridge is tied for 26th with a 36-hole score of 154 in the American Junior Golf Assn. McDonald’s Betsy Rawls Girls’ National Championship at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Del.

AUTO RACING

Marc Hart of Ventura finished 10th in the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.

Charles Utts of Camarillo finished third Saturday in a Late Model Division 50-lap main-event in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series at Mesa Marin Raceway.

FOOTBALL

Fullback Chad Pierson of Oxnard High, The Times’ Ventura County player of the year, signed with USC.

Pierson also considered Cal, Fresno State, New Mexico and Hawaii.

Corey Neal, a two-way back for Sylmar High, is out for at least a month because of a broken ankle suffered last week during a summer passing game.

Sylmar Coach Jeff Engilman hopes Neal will be ready for the Spartans’ opener Sept. 11 at Notre Dame.

BASEBALL

Mike Amundson, a 1996 graduate of Newbury Park High and a junior at University of San Diego, is listed by Baseball America magazine as the top pitcher in the San Diego Collegiate League.

Amundson is 4-2 with a 1.10 earned-run average in 34 2/3 innings. He has struck out 56 and walked six.

BOXING

The first of a series of monthly boxing programs at L.A. Fitness Center in Woodland Hills has been rescheduled for Aug. 29.

Promoter Robert Valdez of Oxnard originally scheduled the program for Aug. 15. The fights will take place in the center’s outdoor lighted tennis arena.

WATER POLO

Goalie Joe Axelrod, a junior-to-be at Harvard-Westlake High, made 12 saves for the Harvard Water Polo Foundation team that defeated the French 20-and-under junior national team, 12-10, at Harvard-Westlake. The teams play at 9 a.m. today. .
