Calabasas Has Pure Goldman

With one week remaining in the summer basketball season, senior point guard Michael Goldman of Calabasas High has emerged as a top point guard.

Academically ineligible most of last season and with limited varsity experience, Goldman has taken advantage of his first extensive playing time to become the talk of the Westlake summer league.

Goldman is 6 feet 1, with long arms, excellent jumping ability [he won the dunk competition at the War on the Floor], good shooting range and is very unselfish. He scored 34 points against Newbury Park.

“He plays like the modern Bob Cousy,” Westlake Coach Gary Grayson said. “He’ll come down and throw a perfect behind-the-head pass a la Cousy. He’s got eyes in the back of his head. He makes everybody else look good.”

Goldman played only six varsity games last season because of academic problems.

“There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t regret what I missed out on,” he said.

But Goldman has shown this summer he’s ready to join the likes of Gilbert Arenas, Cayce Cook and Kent Dennis as one of the region’s top point guards.
