Netting Another Chance
Harvard-Westlake and Westlake highs have done it again.
Both boys’ tennis teams have advanced to a Southern Section final for the second consecutive year.
The difference this time is that it’s not the same one.
Last year, Harvard-Westlake defeated Westlake, 10-8, in the Division III final. Because of its larger enrollment, Westlake was moved up to Division II.
Both teams are top-seeded in their respective divisions and have breezed into the finals today.
Harvard-Westlake (19-4), which has lost only two of 72 sets in the playoffs, faces San Luis Obispo in the Division III final at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana. Westlake (20-0) plays Beverly Hills in the Division II final at the Thousand Oaks Racquet Club. Both matches start at 3:15 p.m.
Harvard-Westlake, coming off a stunning 16-2 semifinal victory over Palm Desert, is led by No. 1 singles player Kevin Bezonsky.
Westlake, which didn’t lose a set in the first two rounds of playoffs, has done nothing but win since losing to Harvard-Westlake last year.
The Warriors, paced by No. 1 singles player Darren Joe (42-0), endured their toughest match of the season and emerged with a 13-5 victory over Mission Viejo in the semifinals.
