All-around talent: Heather Donahue, 13, of Thousand Oaks tied for second All-Around in the finals of the National USA competition in Lakeland, Fla., June 2-6.

Donahue came back from an arm injury that caused her to miss last season to score 9.3 on the floor exercise, 9.2 on the vault, 8.875 on the beam and 8.825 on the uneven bars. Donahue competes for Leading Edge Gymnastics Club in Camarillo.

SOCCER

Hired hand: Michael Scanlon, former Moorpark High and Moorpark College coach, has been hired as women’s coach at Oxnard College.

Scanlon coached the Moorpark College men for three years and led the Raiders to a Western State Conference championship in 1995.

Scanlon coached the Moorpark High boys to a Southern Section championship in 1994, his 10th and final season.

* The Louisville Slugger baseball academy, featuring Dodger pitcher Scott Radinsky as guest speaker, will be held July 14-18 at Pleasant Valley Park. Instructors are former high school coaches Mike Scyphers and Jack Willard.

The academy is for players 6-17. Players may stay overnight or commute. Overnight campers will be lodged at the Camarillo Courtyard Marriott Hotel.

* “War on the Floor” organizers are looking for area Southern Section varsity basketball coaches, male and female, to compete in a game June 28 against their City Section counterparts.

Graduating high school seniors, male and female, are invited to compete in any of several “War on the Floor” individual competitions June 27 at Chatsworth High.

There will be a one-on-one tournament, as well as free-throw, three-point shooting and dunk contests. Cost is $5 per player.

* Gayle Olinekova, an author and one-time world-class marathon runner, will appear at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at the Westlake Prominade on June 28 at 2 p.m. to sign copies of her fifth book, “Power Aging, Staying Young at Any Age.”
