Howard Selected Best in Tri-Valley League

St. Bonaventure High junior forward Stacey Howard has been named player of the year in Tri-Valley League girls’ basketball.

Howard, a transfer from Buena, averaged 17.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 4.2 steals and helped the Seraphs win the league title.

Registration deadline is Wednesday for the annual Hoop-It-Up 3-on-3 basketball tournament that will be played March 21-22 at Cal State Northridge. Information: 310-838-1444.

FOOTBALL

Justin Denham, a 6-foot-6 tight end from Camarillo High, has been accepted to Harvard, where he plans to play football.

SOCCER

High school players from the region will compete for the West teams Sunday at Royal High in all-star competition.

The 22nd annual tournament features four all-star teams in both boys’ and girls’ competition comprised of Southern and City Section players.

The West boys’ team plays at noon and the West girls’ team at 4 p.m.

Senior sweepers Sean Gesell of Royal and Kelly O’Brien have been selected boys’ defensive players of the year in the Marmonte League.

Senior midfielders Ron Zavlodaver of Agoura and John Krill of Thousand Oaks were chosen offensive players of the year, and senior Dan Grimm of Thousand Oaks was named goalkeeper of the year.

Mark Tietjen of Thousand Oaks is coach of the year.

Monroe junior forward Liz Nemeith has been selected offensive player of the year and North Hollywood junior Dara Zeehandelaar has been chosen defensive player of the year in Mid-Valley League girls’ soccer.

Senior forward Megan Daly of Westlake has been named offensive player of the year and Simi Valley junior sweeper Cindy Mallett has been named defensive player of the year in Marmonte League girls’ soccer.

Simi Valley’s Mark Johnson was named coach of the year.

Fiona MacDonald, a women’s All-Western State Conference selection at Ventura College last season, has signed with San Francisco.

Sean Roche, longtime boys’ coach at Buena High and a former Cal Lutheran assistant, has been hired as men’s coach at Moorpark College.

VOLLEYBALL

The USA Volleyball Volleyvan will make a series of stops around Ventura beginning Monday, with a clinic starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Ventura.

The van will stop at Ventura High for a clinic on Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
