Glendale Delivers in Tenth

Freddy Sanchez singled in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Jesse Mitchell from second base and Glendale defeated Bakersfield, 3-2, in a Western State Conference South Division baseball game at Glendale on Tuesday.

Eli Albertson tied the game for Glendale (11-8, 3-3 in conference play) in the seventh inning when he scored from third on Brian Eggleston’s single.

Glendale had runners thrown out at home to end the seventh and eighth innings.

Gerald De La Pena (3-0) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Cesar Soto to earn the victory. He struck out three and walked one.

Mitchell finished with three hits and drove in one run.

In other baseball games:

Ventura 13, Santa Barbara 5--Jason Watkins had two hits and three runs batted in for the Pirates in a Western State Conference victory at Ventura.

David Arroyo hit a two-run double in the second inning for Ventura (5-8, 2-4).

Valley 12, Canyons 7--Frank Diaz hit a grand slam in the first inning and finished with two hits and five runs batted in, and the Monarchs (5-11, 3-4) scored nine unearned runs on six Cougar errors in a Western State Conference South Division game at Canyons.

Jesse Daggett had two home runs and three RBIs for the Cougars (11-5, 3-4).

Cal Lutheran 5, Montclair State 3--Rich Igou, a transfer from San Francisco, earned his first save for the Kingsmen (14-2) by striking out Shawn McCorkle with the bases loaded to end the game at Cal Lutheran.

The ninth-ranked Kingsmen staged a two-out, sixth-inning rally to take a 3-2 lead. Brian Malchow tied the game with his eighth home run, and Donny Churchman scored the go-ahead run on a single by Rich Hernandez.

Hancock 11, Moorpark 3--Zach Gordon hit a home run in the fourth inning for Moorpark (6-13, 3-3) in a Western State Conference North Division home game.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 6, Pierce 1--Leah Barroso had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs, and the Raiders (5-10) benefited from six walks and three hit batters in a Western State Conference game at Moorpark.

TENNIS

Cal State Northridge 6, St. Louis 3--The Matadors won four singles matches and improved to 7-0 in a nonconference match at Northridge. Nely Horowic of Northridge defeated Ingrid Habony, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in a match between top singles players. The Matadors won three of four doubles matches. Horowic and Shaheen Bhanji defeated Andra Wilcox and Vanessa Van Duyn, 8-0.

GOLF

University of San Diego Invitational--Cal State Northridge finished seventh out of 18 teams with a three-round total of 44-over-par 908 at Shadowridge Country Club in Vista.

Ryan Fowlkes led the Matadors with a 10-over-par 226. He finished 21st. Anthony Marciano and Andy Sirivicha tied for 28th with totals of 228.
