San Clemente (28-5) vs. Palos Verdes Peninsula (29-3)

7:30 TONIGHT PENINSULA HIGH

Peninsula’s 46-37 victory over Palisades, the L.A. City Section runner-up, is typical of the game the Panthers want to play--low scoring. Only twice did Peninsula score as many as 60 points before beginning play in the weak Bay League; it scored 79 and 62 points in first- and second-round playoff victories in its section, but followed with a 53-47 victory over Arroyo Grande, a 48-38 victory over Chino Hills Ayala and a 55-40 victory over Long Beach Wilson in the Southern Section I-AA title game. San Clemente has scored 60 or more in 15 of its last 16 games, the exception being its 67-58 loss to Marina for the Southern Section Division I-A championship. While Peninsula wants to play a slow, methodical game and let Natalie Kelly (16.5 points, 8.4 rebounds) get her points--no one else on the team averages as many as seven points--San Clemente will be looking to run the Panthers down. That’s what happened in the first round of the regionals against Vista Rancho Buena Vista, when the Longhorns ran out of gas and the Tritons outscored them in the fourth quarter, 28-7, for a 73-56 victory. Key to San Clemente’s performance is Marissa Ficklin, a 6-2 junior center who averaged four points this season, but scored 17 when Rancho Buena Vista concentrated on Colleen Turnbull (15.4 points), who was moved to the wing. That move was necessitated after Andrea Jacobs sprained her ankle. Jacobs might be ready to play Saturday if the Tritons get that far.
