LONG BEACH STATE BASEBALL

* County connections: Mike Hota of Marina, Scott Redfox of Canyon, Curt Lee of Mater Dei and Fullerton College, Jeff Leuenberger of Canyon, Chris Toomey of Dana Hills, Paul Day of Capistrano Valley and Saddleback College.

* Worth noting: Leuenberger improved to 2-0 on the season Sunday, giving up only three hits in seven innings as Long Beach defeated UC Santa Barbara, 9-1. Day hit his fifth home run of the season for the 49ers (13-8, 6-0).

* Appearing locally: The 49ers play at Cal State Fullerton Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon.

METRO STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

* County connection: Farrah Magee of Ocean View High and Golden West College.

* Worth noting: Magee, a senior forward/center, was named most valuable player of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and MVP of the conference’s tournament, which she helped Metro State in Denver win. She scored 22 points and had 14 rebounds in a 69-54 victory over Mesa State. In 1994, she was a Times Orange County second-team selection and a Sunset League first-team pick as a senior.

USC BASEBALL

* County connections: Rik Currier of Capistrano Valley, Seth Etherton of Dana Hills, Greg Hanoian of Fountain Valley, Craig Jones of La Quinta, Mike Penney of Santa Margarita, Rod Perry Jr. of Mater Dei, Jason Saenz of Mater Dei, Chris Tessman of Santa Margarita, Brad Ticehurst and Josh Townsend of Mater Dei.

* Worth noting: Ticehurst, a junior outfielder, hit a two-run home run Sunday to lead the Trojans (19-5, 7-2) to a 6-3 victory over Arizona State. He also made a key defensive play with a leaping catch to take away a home run in the fifth inning with Arizona State rallying.
