City to Honor Boxer in Sunday Ceremony
Oxnard city leaders Sunday will honor boxer Robert Garcia, who last weekend became Ventura County’s first world champion fighter.
The 23-year-old junior lightweight captured the International Boxing Federation title Friday night in Miami. At Sunday’s ceremony, Mayor Manuel Lopez will give the key to the city to Garcia, whose first professional fight took place when he was a senior at Channel Islands High School.
The ceremony, which runs from 1 to 3 p.m., will feature the Channel Islands High marching band and include an autograph session.
“The community’s been following him for years,” said Manuel Herrera, a Garcia publicist. “We’ve been waiting for this moment.”
