Cox Gets Second No-Hitter

Jodie Cox struck out 14 as she threw her second no-hitter to help Quartz Hill High defeat Sultana, 7-0, in a softball game at Quartz Hill on Thursday.

Cox (4-1), a junior left-hander, lost her bid for a perfect game when she walked a batter with two outs in the fifth inning.

At the plate, she walked three times, scored two runs, and had a two-run double in the sixth to give the Rebels (5-1-1) their final margin of victory.

Christa Galier had a two-run single in the fourth to give Quartz Hill a 3-0 lead.

In other games:

Hoover 3, Buena Park 0--Cori Herbert threw a three-hitter, struck out eight and doubled in a run in the third inning for the Tornadoes (4-1) in a Hoover tournament semifinal game.

Diane Lee had two hits and two RBIs and Justine Takizawa had two hits for Hoover, which plays Bishop Amat today for the title..

Palisades 4, Van Nuys 0--Monica Verdugo of Van Nuys pitched a no-hitter but her teammates committed eight errors and were no-hit by the opposing pitcher.

Verdugo (1-4) struck out eight and walked five for the Wolves (1-4), while Brandy Davis (1-4) struck out nine and walked one for the Dolphins (2-4).

El Camino Real 5, Sylmar 2--Cara Blumfield hit a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth to give the Conquistadores (6-1) a 3-2 lead and Christina Enea followed with a two-run home run in the nonconference game at El Camino Real.

Teresa Estrada was three for three, including a triple, and scored a run for Sylmar (3-4).

Cleveland 7, Venice 0--Freshman right-hander Kate Levin threw just 68 pitches in a two-hitter for the Cavaliers (5-0) in a nonconference victory at Cleveland.

Levin struck out four and did not allow a walk. Letizia Lucero drove in two runs for Cleveland with two hits, including a fifth-inning solo homer.

Monroe 3, Chatsworth 1--Monica Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly to left field scored Vanessa Vargas and gave Monroe (3-4) the lead in a three-run sixth inning in a nonleague home game.

San Fernando 3, Reseda 2--Crystal Vega singled home Michelle Raigoza with the winning run for the Tigers (8-4) in the bottom of the eighth inning of a nonconference game at San Fernando.

Stephanie Yeatts (1-4) struck out 10 and allowed five hits and one earned run for Reseda(1-4).

Canoga Park 10, Birmingham 0--Jenny Pitillo (2-3) allowed three hits over five innings, striking out eight and walking none, and had a triple for Canoga Park (2-3) in a nonconference game at Canoga Park. Sandra Villa had two hits and three runs batted in.

Flintridge Sacred Heart 9, LaSalle 5--Catherine Hugar and Danielle Turner each drove in two runs, and Tiffany Church (4-0) scattered five singles in 5 1/3 innings for Flintridge Sacred Heart (4-0) in a nonleague game at Glorietta Park in Glendale.

Providence 12, San Gabriel Mission 0--Karly Cabrera pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts for Providence (3-1) in a nonleague game at Olive Park.

Cabrera also had two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth inning to give Providence a 6-0 lead.

L.A. Lutheran 4, Viewpoint 1--Melissa Kirk (4-0) pitched a three-hitter and had three hits and three runs batted in for the Lions (4-0) in a nonleague game at Wildflower Park in Thousand Oaks. Coree Bardoner had two hits and an RBI for the Lions.

Oak Park 15, Santa Clara 0--Rachel Colson had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs, and Cindy Verity added three hits, including a double, and three runs batted in for the Eagles (3-3) in a nonleague game at Oak Park.

Dana Porter (3-3) allowed three hits and struck out six in five innings, and also had three hits and two RBIs for the Eagles.

North Hollywood 6, Wilson 1--Claudia Villa was three for three, including a two-run double, for North Hollywood (4-1) in a nonconference game at Wilson.

La Reina 7, Crossroads 2--Danielle Field pitched a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and no earned runs for La Reina (7-1), which is ranked No. 9 in The Times’ regional poll, in a nonleague home game.
