Share

Westchester High will try to win its first state basketball championship when the Comets play Alameda St. Joseph Notre Dame for the Division I boys’ title tonight at Arco Arena.

Westchester (29-3) has been regarded as the favorite to win the championship since the start of the season. The Comets are led by USC-bound forward David Bluthenthal, who averages 21 points, and Syracuse-bound swingman Tony Bland, who averages 14. Westchester, making its first appearance in a state final, is trying to become the 11th City Section team to win a boys’ state title. Crenshaw has won a record eight.

St. Joseph (29-4) is seeking its third state title, its first under Gordon Johnson, who took over after longtime coach Frank LaPorte died in September.
