O.C.’s Valdes, Wells Are Beaten in the Quarterfinal Round

Shane Valdes of Oklahoma and David Wells of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, both from Orange County, were defeated in Friday’s championship quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in Cleveland.

Valdes, a former state champion from Calvary Chapel High, lost to Oklahoma State’s Teague Moore, 2-1, in the 118-pound division. Wells, from El Modena High, was defeated by Nebraska’s Temoer Terry, 12-4, at 158 pounds.

Iowa, winner of the past three team titles and six of the last seven, advanced three into tonight’s finals as the Hawkeyes protected their narrow lead over Oklahoma State.

Iowa has 90 points. Oklahoma State has 85 points and Minnesota 84.

Cal State Fullerton is tied with Northern Iowa for 30th place with 12 points.

County wrestlers fared much better Friday in the tournament’s consolation rounds.

Fullerton’s Sean Kim (118) defeated Nebraska’s Paul Gomez, 14-8, in a second-round match and East Stroudsburg’s Jeremy Sluyter, 11-3, in the third round.

Titan Joe Coughran (126) beat West Virginia’s Bob Patnesky, 3-2, in the second round and Penn State’s Jason Betz, 5-5 in a tiebreaker, in the third.

Jason Webster (167), also from Fullerton, defeated Air Force’s Luke Bindriff, 7-3, in the second round but lost to Harvard’s Ed Mosley, 8-2, in the third.

Mosley, who attended Calvary Chapel, defeated Cal State Bakersfield’s Lionel Halsey, 3-1, in sudden death in the second round.

Another former Calvary Chapel wrestler, Minnesota’s Josh Holiday (158), defeated Army’s Maurice Worthy, 7-5, in the second round but fell to Arizona State’s Matt Suter, 2-0, in the third.

Oregon’s Darryl Christian (150), from Canyon High, lost to Iowa State’s David Maldonado, 9-4, in the second round.
