Charger Boys, Diablo Girls Win Titles at Track Relays

El Toro edged Mission Viejo and Tustin to win the Division I boys’ title, while the Diablos girls’ team ran away with the competition at the Jack Bighead Relays Saturday at Santa Ana College.

The Chargers scored 64 points, followed by Mission Viejo (63) and Tustin (62). El Toro won the 1,600-meter relay in 3 minutes 30.7 seconds and the high jump with a combined mark of 17 feet 2.

Mission Viejo won the girls’ title with 114 points, followed by Katella (67) and El Toro (64). Mission Viejo won five of the six field events, led by Dana Bethel’s mark of 17-11 in the long jump. Sarah Higham cleared 11-0 in the pole vault and Julia Loya had a mark of 35-10 in the shotput.

In the Downey softball tournament:

Capistrano Valley 7, South Torrance 0 (5, time limit)--Jillian Miles pitched a one-hitter and Jenae Miles hit a two-run homer in the first for Capistrano Valley (7-2), which advanced to the consolation championship. Kristen Mullen threw a two-hitter in an earlier 1-0 victory over Long Beach Wilson.

Edison 13, South Gate 5 (5, mercy)--Hillary Hamilton hit two home runs in Edison’s 10-run second inning. The Chargers (5-3) were one-hit in an earlier 3-1 pool-play loss to La Crescenta Crescenta Valley.

In the Garden Grove softball tournament:

Dana Hills 2, Lakewood 0--Loren Thornburg and Nicole Pete combined on their second no-hitter of the day for Dana Hills (4-3). In an earlier 8-0 victory over Century, Thornburg pitched the first four innings and Pete the last in a game stopped after five innings.

El Modena 3, La Quinta 2--Erin Norton had a two-run triple in the bottom of the third inning for El Modena.

Norton also pitched a one-hitter in an 8-0 pool-play victory over Santa Ana. Morgan Scott hit a three-run home run to spark a seven-run second inning for the Knights (6-4-1).

La Habra 5, Calvary Chapel 2 (5, time limit)--Erin Murray had a two-run triple in the first inning and Christina Gibbons had a two-run homer in the fifth for La Habra (7-1-1). The Highlanders won an earlier pool-play game, 4-1, over Tustin.

Orange Lutheran 2, Santiago 0--Laura Miklos had six strikeouts and was two for three with a run scored for Orange Lutheran (6-2) in the second of two pool-play games.

Orange Lutheran defeated La Mirada, 2-0, in the first game. Jessica Edwards had 14 strikeouts for Orange Lutheran.

Troy 10, Long Beach Poly 0--Lauren Chamber pitched a three-hitter and had three strikeouts for Troy (7-1), in the second of two pool-play games.

Troy defeated Garden Grove, 3-0, in the first game.

In the Orange County Championships boys’ volleyball tournament:

Marina 2, Mater Dei 1--Marina advanced to the Division I semifinals with a 12-15, 15-6, 15-12 victory over Mater Dei and victories over Foothill and Dana Hills. The Vikings will host Newport Harbor in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Monday. Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach will play in the other semifinal.
