Chatsworth Wins, Draws Another Ace

Senior left-handed pitcher David Hawk, a touted transfer from North Bakersfield High, made his debut for Chatsworth on Thursday at San Fernando in the seventh inning of a 15-3 Northwest Valley Conference victory.

Hawk, who took over for Mike Kunes (4-0), retired all three batters he faced with two strikeouts and a comebacker.

Kevin O’Hara had four hits, including a two-run home run and a run-scoring double, drove in six runs and scored four for the Chancellors (9-0, 4-0 in conference play), ranked first in The Times’ regional poll.

Edgar Esqueda had a two-run double for San Fernando.

SOFTBALL

Camarillo 2, Westlake 0--Allison Taverner was three for three with an RBI double for the Scorpions (4-0, 2-0) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake (4-5, 0-2).

Katherine Nevard pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts for Camarillo.

Alemany 2, Rio Mesa 0--Kim Deiner (6-3) pitched a five-hitter, struck out six and hit a two-run home run with two out in the top of the sixth in the fourth-place game of the Simi Valley tournament at Rio Mesa.

Village Christian 1, Pasadena Poly 0--Pinch-runner Dawna Gunn scored from second base with two out in the seventh inning on a single by Ashlee DuBois for the Crusaders at Village Christian.

Jaclyn Aranda pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a fourth-inning single for the Crusaders (8-1), striking out 10. Left-hander Wendy Bingham (9-1) also struck out 10 while pitching a two-hitter for Pasadena Poly (9-1), walking one.

Grant 7, Poly 6--Sarah Rothman’s fielder’s choice scored Anna Zetino from third base for the winning run in the seventh inning of a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant.

Kim Inks had three hits for Grant (5-2, 1-1), which trailed, 5-0, after the second inning.

Verdugo Hills 15, Belmont 0--Kim Wood struck out 16 while pitching a one-hitter for the Dons (8-2, 2-0) in a Northern Conference game at Verdugo Hills.

BOYS’ TRACK

Rio Mesa 115, Buena 39, San Marcos 33--John Coleman won the 100 meters in 10.9 seconds, the 200 in 22.8 and the long jump at 20 feet 2 1/2 inches for the Spartans (6-0, 4-0) in a Channel League meet at Rio Mesa.

Coleman was one of four athletes to win at least two individual events for the two-time defending league champion Spartans.

The others were Mike Dickran, who clocked 53.9 in the 400 and 2:03.4 in the 800, Joe Martinez, who ran 15.2 in the 110 high hurdles and 42.3 in the 300 intermediates, and Jerome Stevens, who took the shot at 51-9 and the discus at 131-5.

Ventura 100, Oxnard 50, Dos Pueblos 35--Matt Swaney won the 1,600 in a career-best 4:31.2 and the 3,200 in 10:09.4 for the Cougars (5-1, 4-0) in a Channel League meet at Dos Pueblos.

Clark Goodwin won the 400 in a career-best 51.2 for Ventura.

Camarillo 89, Agoura 44, Westlake 34--Matt Lea won the 200 meters in 22.3 and the 400 in 49.3 to help the Spartans (5-1, 3-1) win a Marmonte League meet at Camarillo.

Hart 74, Burroughs 62--Chris Davis of Hart won the 1,600 in 4:33.9 and placed second in the 3,200 in 10:25.5 in the Foothill League opener at College of the Canyons.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Rio Mesa 73, Buena 72, San Marcos 41--Michelle Villa anchored the Spartans (6-0, 4-0) to victory in the 1,600 relay in a Channel League meet at Rio Mesa.

Dos Pueblos 97, Ventura 60, Oxnard 30--Angela Foster won the shotput at 39-10 and the discus at 120-7 for the Cougars (3-3, 2-2) in a Channel League victory at Dos Pueblos.

Royal 82, Newbury Park 48, Channel Islands 40--Jenny Myszkowski and Jaclyn Pedersen were double winners for the Highlanders (4-0, 4-0) in the Marmonte League meet at Royal.

Camarillo 116, Agoura 34, Westlake 20--Lisa Wygant won four events for the Scorpions (4-1, 3-1) in a Marmonte League meet at Camarillo.

Hart 78, Burroughs 58--Hart (3-0) placed first, second and third in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 to win a Foothill League opener at College of the Canyons.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Kennedy d. Cleveland, 15-0, 15-3, 15-2--Jeff Toon had 18 kills for the Golden Cougars (6-1, 3-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Cleveland.

Buena d. Oxnard, 11-15, 15-10, 15-5, 15-6--Billy Thomas had 13 kills for the Bulldogs (4-2, 2-2) in a Channel League victory at Oxnard.

GOLF

Montclair Prep 201, Crespi 210--Tasha Browner, who is headed to Washington State on a scholarship, and Noriyasu Miyazawa each shot two-over-par 38 for the Mounties in a victory at Knollwood Country Club.
