Freed Pitches 2nd No-Hitter for Pacifica

Pacifica’s Amanda Freed pitched her second consecutive no-hitter, striking out 13 in a 2-0 nonleague softball victory over Kennedy Friday.

Freed struck out 19 in a no-hit victory over La Quinta Thursday. Third-ranked Pacifica (7-1) broke a scoreless tie in bottom of sixth when Dara Webb walked and then stole second. Shauna Goessling, who had both hits, singled to third. A bad pickoff throw to third enabled Webb to score and a second throwing error from left scored Goessling.

Kennedy, ranked 10th in the county, fell to 5-3.

In other nonleague softball:

Capistrano Valley 3, Tustin 0--Kristen Mullen had six strikeouts and no walks to improve her record to 3-1 and Melissa Hara was two for three with a triple--the only extra-base hit of the game. Jenae Miles and Sarina Kissel were two for two for host Capistrano Valley (9-2). Tustin is 3-6-1.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

No. 1 Irvine 101, No. 8 Laguna Hills 73--Erik Birchelbach won the 100 freestyle for Irvine in 50.37 seconds. Birchelbach also won the 50 freestyle (22.98) for the Vaqueros (3-0).

Dan Herr won the 100 butterfly (55.05) and the 500 freestyle (5:04.08) for Laguna Hills.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Mater Dei 11, Costa Mesa 7--Brent Yeung got the only sweep in singles, winning 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 for the Monarchs.

In South Coast League boys’ track and field:

Dana Hills 107, San Clemente 24--Three were double-winners for host Dana Hills (4-0, 1-0). Devin Lindahl won the 200 and the 400 in 23.3 and 52.0, and also came in third in the 3,200. James Brown won the 110 and 300 hurdles in 15.1 and 41.5, and Nate Pilmer won the triple jump (21-1) and long jump (6-2).

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 3, Huntington Beach 0--Scott Archbold, with 23 kills, and Matt Jameson, with 20, led visiting Newport Harbor to a 15-6, 15-8, 19-17 victory. Scott Dore had five solo blocks for the Sailors (3-0). The Oilers are 3-3.

No. 8 Esperanza 3, Calvary Chapel 1--Pat McCarty had 16 kills and Justin Sudduth added 12, in Esperanza’s 15-10, 15-8, 14-16, 15-4 victory. The Aztecs are 4-2.

Capistrano Valley 3, No. 5 Santa Margarita 2--The Cougars (1-3) rallied from a first-game loss to upset Santa Margarita, 16-18, 15-5, 8-15, 15-9, 15-10. The Eagles are 4-1.
