Council to Examine Poli Street Closure

Share

Considering a study on the roadways above Ventura High School, the City Council today will weigh several alternatives for closing or opening hillside streets to improve traffic flow.

The review is the latest in a long-running debate over hillside traffic, problems that stem from decisions made four years ago to close during school hours a section of Poli Street that bisects Ventura High School.

The move was affirmed by voters during a citywide referendum in November 1994. Yet some neighbors complained that the weekday closure shifted traffic onto nearby residential streets, some of which have since been closed during school hours.

In April, a city consultant began surveying area traffic. The study led to nine alternatives outlined before neighborhood residents during three public workshops.

The council is set to consider the alternatives--including street humps, street closures and other traffic-slowing measures. Council members, however, may instead opt for a survey to ask neighbors what to do with the curving, narrow hillside streets when Poli Street is closed.

The City Council meets at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 501 Poli St.
