Some broadcast and cable programs contain material included in the public school curriculum and on standardized examinations. Here are weekend home-viewing tips:

* Today. “Mystery of the Andes” (A&E;, 6-7 p.m., repeating 10-11 p.m.)

This science documentary reports on a recent discovery of mammal fossils embedded in ancient Andean rock formations, raising serious new questions about the geological and biological history of the planet. Bill Kurtis hosts.

Also, “Where It’s At: The Rolling Stone State of the Union” (KABC, 9-11 p.m.) This documentary special airs on the 30th anniversary of Rolling Stone magazine. Emmy and Peabody award-winning documentary filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky survey youth issues such as values, hopes, sex, love and music. Historical as well as recent footage is combined with interviews of commune dwellers, rock stars, homeless teens, military cadets and veteran observers of recent history such as Tom Wolfe and Walter Cronkite.

* Friday. “The Great Gatsby” (TCM, 8:30-11 p.m.) is a movie based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the script for this 1974 version. Robert Redford, Mia Farrow star. Available on video.

* Saturday. “The New Detectives” (Discovery, 11 p.m.-midnight) is recommended for taping, both because of the late hour and the advanced science content. This documentary examines the importance of DNA analysis and the impact it has on the criminal justice system.

* Sunday. “Tell the Truth and Run: George Seldes and the American Press” (KCET, 3-5 p.m.) is a biographical documentary about a veteran independent-minded journalist.

Also, “National Memorial Day Concert 1998” (KCET, 8-9:30 p.m.). This live broadcast from the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol celebrates American history and veterans of the armed forces. It also provides a survey of patriotic and classical music. Ossie Davis hosts. Featured presenters include Gen. Colin Powell, Charles Durning, Christine Lahti, Richard Dreyfuss, Leslie Uggams, Jack Jones and Bobby McDuffy. Erich Kunzel conducts the Nation Symphony Orchestra.
