Cox Increases Scoreless Streak, Leads Quartz Hill Past Hart, 1-0

Jodie Cox threw a two-hitter, struck out 10 and walked one to help Quartz Hill High to a 1-0 victory over Hart in a second-round game of the Southern Section Division II softball playoffs at Quartz Hill on Tuesday.

Cox, a left-hander junior, didn’t allow a runner past first base in the last six innings, increasing her scoreless innings streak to 35. It was her fourth consecutive shutout and 14th of the season.

Quartz Hill (21-3-2), which will play second-seeded Righetti in a quarterfinal on Thursday at a site to be determined, scored in the third.

Freshman Kellie Cox, Jodie’s sister, doubled to start the inning and scored when senior Penny Wood was hit in the back as she beat out a throw to first on an infield single.

Sophomore Amanda Fortune (16-5) threw a three-hitter, struck out three and walked five for Hart (21-7).

In another Division II second-round game:

Righetti 3, Rio Mesa 0--Laura Moreno’s second-inning single for visiting Rio Mesa was the only hit allowed by Righetti’s Jocelyn Forest.

Forest struck out 14 and walked Rhianna Rogers in the seventh inning. Righetti is 28-4.

Marcella Ramirez (11-4) scattered seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk for Rio Mesa (22-6).

DIVISION III

Redondo Union 4, Calabasas 0--Calabasas (18-6) managed only three hits, including a double and single by Sara Hall, at Redondo Union. Jessica Armacost had a double for Calabasas.

Amy Rosson (14-5) went the distance for Calabasas, allowing nine hits.

DIVISION IV

Harvard-Westlake 7, La Reina 0--Sophomore Anna Russell pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and the Wolverines upset top-seeded La Reina at Harvard-Westlake.

Harvard-Westlake (16-12), which finished second to Chaminade in the Mission League, led, 5-0, after two innings. Russell (13-11) and Jenny Bruno had run-scoring singles in the first inning. Kim Koral had two hits, walked twice and scored three runs.

Lisa Feigenbaum had a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

Kristin Ward had a double for La Reina (25-3), ranked fourth in the region by The Times.

Alemany 4, La Canada 2--Rosalie Ramirez had two hits, including a two-run fourth-inning double that put host Alemany (18-10) on top to stay at the Sylmar Independent Baseball League Complex.

Sarita Contreras (4-3) scattered eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks to earn the victory, and catcher Meghann Reiss picked off her 10th and 11th runners.

Jamie Hurst doubled, then scored on a single by Lauren Guza to give La Canada (15-9) a 1-0 third-inning lead, but Reiss doubled in a run and scored on a single by Sasha Hernandez in the bottom of the inning.

Megan Stevens singled in Sunny Park in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Stevens (12-6) struck out two and allowed eight hits.

Chaminade 12, La Salle 0--Maureen LeCocq (21-7-1) pitched her 18th shutout for Chaminade (21-7-1), allowing only a third-inning infield hit by Erin Swedlow and striking out nine for the Eagles at La Salle (16-8).

Amy Biersch drove in two runs with two hits for Chaminade and scored three times, and LeCocq had three hits, including a run-scoring double, and scored once. Freshman Lindsey Weinstein had four hits and scored twice for the Eagles.

LeCocq has pitched 150 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run and her earned-run average is 0.07. Chaminade has outscored its playoff opponents, 30-0.

DIVISION V

Santa Maria St. Joseph 3, L.A. Baptist 0--The Knights had only one hit off Shannon Flynn at St. Joseph.

Flynn (13-10) struck out two and walked one for second-seeded St. Joseph (15-11). Nikki Girard singled in the sixth inning for L.A. Baptist’s (16-7) only hit.

Paraclete 1, Village Christian 0--Barbara Alaniz scored on a wild pitch by Jaclyn Aranda with two out in the sixth inning for host Paraclete (20-5-2).

Alaniz singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt to set up the scoring opportunity. She finished with two of Paraclete’s three hits and two stolen bases.

DIVISION VI

Cornerstone Christian 4, L.A. Lutheran 3--Senior Melissa Kirk pitched a three-hitter for L.A. Lutheran against top-seeded Cornerstone Christian at Freedom Park in Camarillo. Seydi Morales had two hits and scored a run for L.A. Lutheran.
