Dorsey Is Expected to Continue Streak

Dorsey High is favored to win its third consecutive boys’ title in the City Section track and field championships at Birmingham High today, but Woodland Hills Taft is expected to end the Dons’ title streak at three in the girls’ meet.

Dorsey, led by junior hurdlers Terry Ellis and Greg Lee and senior triple jumpers J.L. Lewis and Edell Shepard, is a slight favorite over Taft and Gardena in the boys’ meet.

Taft, led by seniors Eboni Grayson and Frances Santin, is heavily favored to win its first title in the girls’ meet.

The meet will start with field events at 4 p.m. Running events begin at 6.

KLCS, Channel 58 in most areas, will televise the meet from 6-9:30.

Chatsworth, seeking its first baseball 4-A championship since 1990, is the top-seeded team for the playoffs that begin Friday.

The West Valley League champion Chancellors (26-3) will play host to Van Nuys. East Valley champion Sylmar is seeded No. 2 and will face visiting Palisades.

Pacific League champion Carson is seeded No. 3 and North Valley champion Kennedy is No. 4.

San Fernando Valley teams have won 24 of the last 25 championships in the 4-A Division.

Franklin is the top-seeded team in the 3-A Division. The Panthers will play Fremont in their opener.

Bell, the No. 2-seeded team, opens against Crenshaw, No. 3 Los Angeles plays Eagle Rock and No. 4 Huntington Park plays Marshall.

Championship games are scheduled for June 11 at Dodger Stadium.

Artin Tafazoli of Palisades will meet LeGeorge Mauldin of Dorsey for the boys’ singles tennis championship Friday at MountainGate Country Club.

Tafazoli defeated Frank Vlahovic of Verdugo Hills and Mauldin defeated Farhad Hajimirzaee of Taft in the semifinals Wednesday.

Ricky Rollins and Blake Baumgarten of Palisades will play teammates Jung Cho and Joseph Kim for the doubles title.
