Corona del Mar Stops El Toro

Jason Palda and Garrett Gentry each scored a goal in the fourth quarter to lead No. 7 Corona del Mar to a 9-8 victory over second-ranked El Toro in Sea View League boys’ water polo.

The victory enabled Corona del Mar (14-10, 4-1) to finish second in league; the Chargers (19-7, 3-2) dropped to third.

Greg Marchiorlatti led host Corona del Mar with three goals and David Fabian, Palda and Gentry each had two.

In another league game:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 19, Irvine 3--The Sailors (15-4, 5-0) were led by Peter Belden and Paul Kepner, each of whom scored four goals for Newport Harbor, which won the league championship. Irvine finished 2-3 in league.

In the Century League:

No. 5 Foothill 26, Orange 6--Pat Logan scored eight goals for Foothill (16-8, 4-0), which led 10-0 after one quarter. Eitan Goldstein and Matt Ellis each had four goals for the Knights, who will host eighth-ranked Villa Park on Friday for the title.

Orange dropped to 0-5 in league.

No. 8 Villa Park 14, Canyon 8--Nick Pacelli scored four goals and Charlie Fisher had three goals and eight steals to lead host Villa Park (16-10, 4-0).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 10, Sonora 3--The Highlanders (13-10, 5-0) won the league championship with the victory at home.

Nathan Allard scored six goals and Ken Caldwell had 12 saves to lead La Habra, which is ranked seventh in Division II.

In the Golden West League:

No. 3 Servite 16, Westminster 12--Mike Rustemeyer scored four goals in leading Servite (19-3, 5-0) to the league title. Ben Carroll, Vincent Bevins and Jared Swan each scored three for the Friars, who took a 10-1 halftime lead.

In the Sunset League:

No. 6 Marina 11, Esperanza 1--Jeff Larson scored three goals and had eight steals, leading Marina (21-2, 5-0) to its first league title in four years.

Justin Fassnacht led Marina with four goals and four steals and Mark Armstrong had 11 saves, including a blocked four-meter penalty shot.

In the Orange League boys’ cross-country finals:

Rainwater wins title--Brea Olinda’s Matt Rainwater won the three-mile race at Craig Park in 16 minutes 5 seconds.

Ismael Padilla of Anaheim finished second in 16:17.

In the Pacific Coast League finals:

Munoz repeats--Alberto Munoz led Estancia to its second consecutive team championship with a repeat individual victory at Irvine Park. Munoz finished in 15:39 to lead the Eagles, who finished with 43 points. Laguna Hills was second with 59 points.

In the Orange League girls’ cross-country finals:

Brea Olinda sweeps--Jenny Thune led the Wildcats, who took the top seven spots in the race. Thune won the race in 18:39.

Michelle DiMeo also qualified for Brea, finishing second in 19:06, on the three-mile course at Craig Park.

In the Pacific Coast League finals:

Marquand wins--Allyson Marquand won her third individual title in four years and led University to a second-consecutive team championship. Marquand won in 17:21 at Irvine Park, and teammate Jessica Howard finished third in 18:21 to lead the Trojans.

In the Empire League girls’ golf final:

Hitomi wins title--Remy Hitomi of Cypress won the title and an automatic berth in the Southern Section Individual Championships with a score of 46 at Dad Miller.

Sarah Yarbrough of team champion El Dorado finished second at 47, and also earned a trip to the finals Nov. 23 at Mission Lakes in Desert Hot Springs.

In the South Coast League finals:

Ward wins title--Karlie Ward of Capistrano Valley shot a 170 over two rounds to win the individual title at Temeku Hills (par 72) in Temecula.

Shayna Shaw of Mater Dei finished second, winning a playoff with Mission Viejo’s Monica Dalton after shooting 178.

Ward and Shaw qualify for the section finals.

In the Empire League girls’ tennis quarterfinals:

Kim upsets VanSmaalen--Sixth-seeded Linda Kim of Loara defeated Cypress’ Cherise VanSmaalen, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, to advance to today’s semifinals at the Anaheim Tennis Center.

Top-seeded Samantha Waller of Cypress also advanced, along with El Dorado’s Annie McMillian.

The top four seeded doubles teams advanced.

In the Orange League finals:

Scanlan wins--Brea Olinda’s Kelly Scanlan won the league title and finished league singles play with a 20-0 record. She defeated teammate Katie Mayberry, 6-0, 6-2, in the final.

Second-seeded Annie James and Nancy Lee, also of Brea Olinda, defeated Valencia’s Lauren Jacobs and Jamie Penano, 6-4, 6-4, for the doubles title.

In the Pacific Coast League finals:

Maddocks wins--Laguna Beach’s Ashley Maddocks defeated Jessica Prause of Laguna Hills, 6-1, 6-0, to win the league singles title.
