Dark horse: St. Margaret’s (5-3). This season, the Tartans won their first 11-man title in the Academy League. They have won five games in a row and have a fine all-around player in defensive back/running back/kicker Alex Perin, as well as a coach (Brady Lock) who isn’t afraid to take chances.

Notes: Boron has manhandled teams in the division, outscoring opponents by an average of 31 points. The Bobcats, who feature a front line that averages 6-feet-3 and 230 pounds, defeated Linfield Christian, 32-6, and Lone Pine, which isn’t seeded, 28-6. . . . Lone Pine hosts Capistrano Valley Christian. Daniel Gray leads Lone Pine. He has rushed for 1,835 yards and 20 touchdowns, while teammate Ezia Tsosie has rushed for 1,026 yards and 18 touchdowns. . . . Capistrano Valley Christian Coach Keith Patefield blamed himself for the Eagles’ 21-17 loss to St. Margaret’s that decided the Academy League title Friday. “Terrible play-calling on my part,” Patefield said. . . . Brentwood, which opens by hosting the at-large team, Lucerne Valley, recorded five shutouts. La Canada Flintridge Prep, which opens against St. Margaret’s, lost to unseeded Pasadena Poly, 6-0. . . . In common opponents, the best measure of this division is how well everyone defeated L.A. Ribet Academy, which did not qualify for the playoffs. St. Margaret’s beat Ribet, 42-12. Twin Pines beat Ribet, 12-6. Downey Calvary Chapel beat Ribet, 22-16, and Capistrano Valley Christian defeated Ribet, 34-20. Colton Christian Center Academy, which could match up in the second round with Capistrano Valley Christian, beat Ribet, 26-14.
