Paced by a balanced attack of passing and running, top-seeded La Mirada overwhelmed Buena Park, 41-13, in a first-round Southern Section Division IX game played at La Mirada Stadium.

La Mirada’s Mike Lemon gained 309 yards in 20 carries. The first time Lemon handled the ball, he took it on his own four-yard line and raced 96 yards for La Mirada’s first score. He also scored on runs of one, 53 and 34 yards.

Joining Lemon in the impressive victory was quarterback Chris Cox, who completed 10 of 18 attempts for 189 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown was a 79-yarder to Bo Price with six seconds remaining in the half to tie it at 13.

Buena Park Coach Manny Saiz said before the game that it would be necessary to keep La Mirada from picking up large amounts of yardage on every down. In the first half, the Coyotes were fairly successful in doing this, holding Lemon to less than five yards on eight of his carries.

But in the second half, Lemon was able to score three of his four touchdowns in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach.

Buena Park was led by Marquis Colvin who picked up 34 yards in 13 carries and two touchdowns. Leading passer for the Coyotes was Earl Parker, who threw for 149 yards on eight completions.
