Golden West Women Make It Two in a Row

Golden West had no trouble winning a second consecutive state women’s water polo title as the top-seeded Rustlers defeated Grossmont, 15-4, in the championship game Sunday at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

The Rustlers overwhelmed Grossmont on defense, giving up one goal in the the first half. Golden West led, 10-1, at the break.

Amanda Ogle, a sophomore from Valencia High, had five goals to lead Golden West as teammates Sharon Vanderpas, a freshman from Fountain Valley High, and Melody Warren had three goals each.

Warren, a freshman from San Pasqual High, was selected the tournament’s most valuable player.

Golden West ends the season at 33-0-1. The Rustlers have a combined record of 69-1-1 over the last two seasons.

In the men’s water polo state final:

West Valley 13, Golden West 7--Golden West’s streak of nine straight state titles came to a halt as the Rustlers were unable to mount any kind of momentum.

Golden West got scoring from only two players as Adriano Marsili had four goals and Ivan Vranjes three. The Rustlers end the season 33-2-1. West Valley (33-1) was led by Sasha Meese’s five goals.

West Valley jumped to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and was up, 6-2, at the half.

In the third-place game:

Merced 9, Saddleback 6--Tied at the half, 5-5, Merced came back to score two goals in the third and fourth quarters to overtake Saddleback. Bryan Casserly had two goals to lead Saddleback (28-9).

Carlos Gonzalez, formerly of Mission Viejo High, had 10 saves for Saddleback. Doug Tingeldein had four goals for Merced (20-11-2).
