Police have arrested two 22-year-old men suspected of setting the fire at a Westlake district apartment building in 1993 that killed 10 people, the Los Angeles Police Department said Tuesday night.

More than 40 people were injured in the Burlington Avenue fire, one of the most lethal residential fires in city history. Several of those killed were children.

The LAPD, which will hold a press conference today, released no other information about the suspects or about the five-year investigation that led to the arrests.

After the fire, The Times reported that city fire officials failed to follow procedures in forcing the building owner to repair violations, including propped-open fire doors, that officials said contributed to the 10 deaths.

City fire officials accused the owners of the 69-unit building of negligence for failing to establish a 24-hour fire watch as required by fire officials after a blaze in a vacant unit the previous month. A guard was to patrol the building’s corridors every half hour.
