Concord De La Salle’s football team extended its national-record win streak to 79 games with a victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei last weekend, but several significant win streaks involving Southern Section teams ended.

Covina Northview defeated two-time defending Division IV champion Hacienda Heights Wilson, 34-7, the first time the Wildcats were defeated on the field in 31 games. Wilson had forfeited a season-opening victory over Rowland last year for using an ineligible player.

The game was called at the end of the third quarter after an injury suffered by Wilson linebacker Juan Andrade, who collapsed after making a tackle on the last play of the quarter. Andrade, who initially said he had no feeling in his extremities, was taken to County-USC Medical Center. He regained feeling and movement in his arms and legs on Saturday and was released from the hospital on Monday.

Anaheim Esperanza ended Palos Verdes Peninsula’s 40-game regular-season winning streak with a 34-28 victory last Thursday. Esperanza kicker Nathan Fiske, who kicked a 56-yard field goal against Rancho Alamitos on Sept. 18, kicked a 55-yard field goal against Peninsula.

Santa Margarita and La Jolla Bishop’s have won 28 games in a row and have the state’s second-longest winning streak behind De La Salle.

The Long Beach Poly boys’ cross-country team won the state Division I championship last year behind individual state titlist Chad Durham.

This year, another Durham is leading the Jackrabbits. Junior Aaron Durham, Chad’s brother, won last weekend’s Bellarmine-Jefferson Invitational at Griffith Park in 14 minutes 33 seconds over the 2.8-mile course. Long Beach Poly took four of the top five places.

Simi Valley upset Thousand Oaks to win the girls’ Division I race, but there was no surprise in the girls’ individual standings. Senior Lauren Fleshman of Canyon Country Canyon continued her fast start this season by winning in 16:50. It was the second victory in as many weeks for Fleshman, who won the Woodbridge Invitational in a meet record 16:35.
