Estancia Beats Anaheim for 1st Victory of Season

NORTH COUNTY

Manu Tanielu scored two touchdowns and threw an 11-yard pass for the game-winner with 1 minute 49 seconds left in the third quarter as Estancia defeated Anaheim, 20-14, Friday night at Glover Stadium.

Estancia is 1-3. Anaheim is 0-4.

Host Anaheim’s Damien Ibarra and Robert Ramirez combined for both touchdowns, leading visiting Estancia twice in the first half.

Tanielu made it 7-6 in the first quarter, receiving a 57-yard pass from Ricky Romo, and Kenny Valbuena hit Tanielu with a 49-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-13 with 2:26 left in the first half.

Brett Valbuena scored the winning touchdown on a pass from Tanielu in the third quarter. The score remained 20-14 when the kick failed.

Tanielu finished the game with 89 yards in 20 carries and caught five passes for 160 yards. Kenny Valbuena passed seven times for 136 yards.

El Dorado 35, El Modena 22: Brandon Fischer and Jason Vermilyer each scored two touchdowns to lift El Dorado (2-2).

Bryce Nebeker had three receptions for 67 yards and Vermilyer rushed seven times for 79 yards.

El Modena is 2-2.

Sunny Hills 44, Edmonton (Canada) LaZerte 7: Chris Wheaton rushed for three first-half touchdowns to lead the Lancers at Buena Park High.

Wheaton finished with 126 yards in seven carries for Sunny Hills (2-2).

Wheaton opened the game with a 17-yard touchdown run. After LaZerte (1-3) scored its only touchdown of the game on a 15-yard run by Chris Gignac, Wheaton scored again on a 35-yard run.

The Lancers closed out the first quarter with a safety when LaZerte snapped a punt out of the end zone.

Wheaton scored his final touchdown early in the second quarter on a 45-yard run.

The Lancers, who scored 20 second-quarter points, also got touchdowns from George Seargent on 90-yard interception return, Brian Broschak on a 15-yard reception from Jared Bruce and Kenny Beatty on a 20-yard run.

CENTRAL COUNTY

Mietkiewicz Helps Marina Get Past Westminster

Ray Mietkiewicz gained 239 yards in 23 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead visiting Marina to a 35-13 victory over Westminster.

Marina (2-2) trailed, 13-7, until Scot Austin scored on a 55-yard run to tie the score. Marina took the lead for good on the extra-point kick.

Austin scored one touchdown and Mietkiewicz scored two in the second half to seal the game for Marina. Austin gained 111 yards in 10 carries.

Maurice Cureton and Mike Cope scored Westminster’s touchdowns in the first quarter. Kelly Coburn completed 15 of 26 for 117 yards for host Western (2-2).

Troy 28, Canyon 21: Todd Frazier scored touchdowns on runs of 60 and 23 yards to lead Troy at El Modena High.

Canyon (1-3) opened the scoring on a 10-yard run by Olu Davis. Troy (2-2) then scored 28 consecutive points before Canyon (1-3) responded with 14 in the second half.

After Frazier’s first touchdown, teammate Jesse Peterson scored on an 11-yard run and Ben Reneau caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Oliver. Frazier closed out Troy’s scoring with a third-quarter touchdown to give the Warriors a 28-7 lead.

Davis closed the score to 28-14 on a five-yard run, and Marc Rodriguez capped Canyon’s scoring with a 19-yard touchdown reception.

SOUTH COUNTY

Peredia, Garcia Lead Newport Harbor to 4-0

Robert Peredia and Oscar Garcia helped provide a balanced attack for Newport Harbor as the Sailors shut out Glendora, 33-0, at Newport Harbor.

Peredia rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns in 31 carries and Garcia caught five passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns as the Sailors remained undefeated at 4-0.

Peredia scored in the first quarter on a five-yard run and then in the second when he broke a tackle on a 13-yard run.

Garcia scored touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters. Quarterback Steve Gorman connected with Garcia on a 20-yard pass for his first touchdown and a 37-yarder for his second.

Justin Jacobs scored the Sailors’ other touchdown when he took a two-yard pass from Gorman.

Foothill 15, El Toro 14:Senior Tino Dempsey scored on two-point conversion pass from Robby Koster with 1:19 left in the third quarter to lift Foothill (2-2).

Dempsey caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Koster to put Foothill within one. He had four receptions for 99 yards.

Ryan Switzer’s touchdowns gave El Toro the lead twice. His first came on a 23-yard run with 11:14 left in the second quarter. He scored again on a four-yard run with 4:10 left in the third.

Koster’s four-yard touchdown run in the second quarter tied the score, 7-7, for Foothill.

Trabuco Hills 37, Aliso Niguel 6: Brandon Heaney threw and ran for touchdowns and kicked a field goal to lead visiting Trabuco Hills.

Heaney opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal, then connected with Dustin Pratt for a six-yard touchdown, giving the Mustangs a 10-0 lead.

Pratt ran for a 17-yard touchdown, then it was Heaney again, bolting 65 yards to make it 24-0.

Trabuco Hills (3-1) closed out the first-half scoring with a 70-yard punt return by Chad Pieroni.

Heaney had 127 yards in eight carries and Al Gandall rushed for 127 in 20 tries for the Mustangs.

Aliso Niguel is 0-4.

Western 48, Costa Mesa 6Jamayah Williamson scored four touchdowns and had 337 total yards to lead visiting Western (3-1). Williamson gained 161 yards in seven carries and 176 yards in three receptions.

Williamson scored his first touchdown on a 96-yard run in the first quarter. He added one on a 65-yard pass from Jason Baughman at the end of the second quarter, and two more on 53- and 58-yard passes from Baughman in the third quarter.

Baughman completed four of eight for 218 yards.

Will Ruffin, Trevell Jackson and Ivan Ramirez also scored for Western (3-1).

Josh Mendez scored for Costa Mesa (2-2) in the fourth quarter. Western outgained Costa Mesa, 463-118.

Laguna Hills 19, Carlsbad 14: Derek Stevens returned an interception 46 yards to the Carlsbad five-yard line late in the first half at Laguna Hills High, setting up what turned out to be the Hawks’ winning touchdown.

Laguna Hills scored all its points in the second quarter after falling behind, 7-0, in the first quarter. Jeff Fischer scored six seconds into the quarter on a 14-yard pass from quarterback Brandon Champlin. Dan Kempff’s kick tied the score at 7.

The Hawks went ahead, 13-7, with 4:20 left when Kempff caught a 31-yard pass from Champlin. Ryan Johnson made it 19-7 when he scored on a four-yard pass from Champlin at 1:22, after Stevens’ interception.

Johnson carried the ball 22 times for 80 yards.

The Hawks’ defense had a big second half, shutting out Carlsbad. Jeff Fischer recovered a fumble and Kris Scher had a key sack.

Carlsbad had one final chance, driving from its 23-yard line to Laguna Hills’ 46. However, four incomplete passes later, Laguna Hills took over and ran out the last 23 seconds of the clock.
