Villa Park Reaches Semifinals

Sophomore Charlie Fisher had a season-high four goals to lead Villa Park to an 11-7 victory over Whittier La Serna in the quarterfinals of the Villa Park boys’ water polo tournament Friday at Villa Park.

Two-meter man Nick Pacelli scored three goals. Senior goalie Matt Doerr had 11 saves for the Spartans (9-5).

Villa Park, ranked seventh in the county, will play La Jolla Bishops in a semifinal game at 10 a.m. at Villa Park.

In another quarterfinal game:

El Toro 7, La Canada 5--Tim Craycraft and Richie Schwanbeck each scored two goals for El Toro. Doug Brown made 13 saves for the Chargers (12-4), who play in the semifinals today at 11 a.m. at Canyon.

In other tournament games:

Brea Olinda 11, Saddleback 9--Jeff Baxley scored four goals and Kirk Reimer three in a consolation game. Baxley and Reimer each had two goals in a second-round 11-7 loss to Santa Barbara.

Edison 12, Buena Park 6--Kyle Tague scored four goals and had three steals for Edison. Shaun Carman had three goals and five steals for Edison (5-7). Bob Wolfe made nine saves for the Chargers, who lost to Laguna Beach, 17-8, in the second round. Buena Park is 4-5.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Garden Grove 10, Valencia 8--Nicole Lerma swept in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, for the host Argonauts (8-2). No. 3 doubles players Van Ngo and Donna Dolar won two of three sets, 6-3, 6-3, 1-6.

Santa Ana 16, La Quinta 2--Karina Zaragoza and Liz Cruz swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting Santa Ana (5-2, 1-0).

In Express League girls’ volleyball:

Liberty Christian 3, Walnut Southlands Christian 0--Crissy Davis had eight aces and seven kills in Liberty Christian’s 15-5, 15-3, 15-4 victory. The Minutemen are 6-0, 1-0.

In the Golden West League:

Rosary 3, Ocean View 0--Beth Ludin had 13 kills and 10 aces as Rosary upset Ocean View, 15-9, 15-11, 16-14. Ludin had four consecutive aces to seal the third game. Rosary (4-3, 1-0) overcame an 11-6 deficit in that game. Jessica Bradosky had 13 kills to lead visiting Ocean View (4-2, 0-1), which won the Division III-A state title last year.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Canyon 3, Century 0--Regan Riewertz led the visiting Comanches (4-2) with 13 kills and 15 digs. Teammate Meghan O’Neill had 19 assists for the Chargers, who won 15-9, 15-11, 15-13.

Newport Harbor 3, Laguna Beach 0-Kathy Lavold had 11 kills and April Ross 10 as visiting Newport Harbor (3-0) won, 15-9, 15-6, 15-4.
