Burroughs Survives Test in Water Polo

The Burroughs High water polo team passed a tough test in its Almont League opener Friday, forcing 1997 Southern Section Division III runner-up Bell Gardens into overtime.

Bell Gardens maintained its No. 2 ranking in the coaches’ poll with a 19-14 victory after outscoring the eighth-ranked Indians, 6-1, in the extra periods..

Jason Falitz scored two of his eight goals in the fourth period for Burroughs (12-6), including a four-meter penalty shot with 10 seconds remaining that knotted the score, 13-13.

Joe Gonzalez scored three goals for Bell Gardens, which was outshot, 25-24.

In other water polo games:

Royal 9, Mira Costa 8--Ryan Apperson scored three of his five goals in the third period and the unranked Highlanders (13-6) snapped a 5-5 tie against the No. 9-ranked Mustangs in a Southern Section Division III nonleague game at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Ramiro Saldain had two goals for Royal, which recorded its fourth consecutive victory.

Newbury Park 10, Thousand Oaks 6--Matt Rhodes scored three of his five goals in the fourth quarter to help the Panthers stretch a 6-5 edge into a 9-5 advantage and Newbury Park went on to win the Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

The victory was the first over the Lancers for Newbury Park Coach Jeff Warshaw, a Thousand Oaks assistant the past four years.

Newbury Park (9-10, 2-1) got the victory despite five goals by Lancer Mike Schermer, including his last on a four-meter penalty shot for the Thousand Oaks’ only fourth-quarter score.

Sid Pehrson had three goals and Blake Mallen and Aaron Barr each had one for Newbury Park, which has won six of its last nine games.

Cate 9, Nordhoff 8--Cory Gustafson scored five goals for Nordhoff (4-12, 1-2) in a Frontier League match at Cate. Adam Horwitz had five goals for Cate (5-1, 3-0).

Andy Fredell made seven saves for Nordhoff.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Thacher 12, Nordhoff 6--Nordhoff’s No. 1 doubles team of Annie Gerhart and Dana DeMoor won two of three sets, but the Rangers (5-7) fell in a nonleague match at Thacher.

Karin Deden and Beckie Engel each won one set for Nordhoff’s only singles victories.

No. 1 and No. 2 singles players Katie Russell and Liz Sanseau each swept three sets for Thacher.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Campbell Hall def. Windward, 15-13, 15-10, 9-15, 5-15, 15-3--The Vikings blew a two-game lead but came on strong in the fifth game for a Delphic League victory at Campbell Hall.

Nitia Small had nine kills and Alexis Kotkelto and Lacy Herrick each had eight for the Vikings.

Viewpoint def. Holy Martyrs, 7-15, 8-15, 15-7, 15-4, 15-3--Darby Stearn had 16 kills and Mindy Baker had 18 assists for the Patriots (7-4, 5-2) in a Liberty League victory at Viewpoint.
