Garden Grove Holds Off Bolsa Grande

Garden Grove survived a late rally to post a 21-14 victory over host Bolsa Grande in a Garden Grove League game Thursday.

Miguel Medina of Garden Grove (3-5, 1-3), who had an interception, knocked down Bolsa Grande quarterback Doug Baughman’s 50-yard desperation pass in the end zone as time expired.

Junior Diaz scored on two touchdown runs and Eddie Vailolo, who also had an interception, scored on a short run to give Garden Grove a 21-0 lead.

Bolsa Grande (0-8, 0-4) rallied behind Baughman, who completed 12 of 24 passes for 206 yards. His 48-yard touchdown pass to Steve Jenks and 45-yard scoring pass to John Bui drew the Matadors to within, 21-14.

Bolsa Grande got the ball back on its 30 with three minutes remaining, but the drive ended when Baughman’s fourth-and-20 pass to Jenks went for 19 yards.

Bolsa Grande got the ball back with eight seconds remaining, and after a 13-yard-completion to Jenks, Baughman’s final pass fell incomplete.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 44, Orange 21--Hardy Fatu rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns in 22 carries for Santa Ana Valley (3-4-1, 1-1-1) at El Modena High.

Larry Chavez also scored two touchdowns for the Falcons, returning an interception 40 yards and catching a 28-yard scoring pass from quarterback Miguel Guerrero.

Santa Ana Valley’s Larry Collins blocked a punt and Eliu Fatu returned it for a touchdown and Aaron Barragan returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown.

Orange is 0-8, 0-3.

In nonleague games:

Van Nuys Montclair Prep 19, Calvary Chapel 14--Keith Short completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Mike Kobzeff--his second touchdown reception--with 1:37 remaining to bring Calvary Chapel (3-3-1) to within 19-14, but Montclair Prep recovered the ensuing onside kick at Los Angeles Valley College.

Short rushed for 147 yards in 29 carries and completed five of 12 passes for 86 yards.

Gary Sonkur rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns in 32 carries for Montclair Prep (5-2).

Santiago 51, Norwalk 20--James Thomas rushed for 240 yards in 27 carries to help Santiago (6-2) score 31 points in the first half while holding Norwalk (4-4) to 19 yards and zero points.
