5 Hurt in Hit-and-Run Accident

A hit-and-run chain-reaction accident that a CHP officer said was caused by a truck tractor resulted in minor injuries to five and closure of the Hollywood Freeway during rush hour Thursday morning.

California Highway Patrol Officer John Price said the 6:30 a.m. accident was caused by a northbound big rig tractor truck that changed lanes near the Lankershim Boulevard offramp.

The lane change caused a Mitsubishi to swerve and strike a Datsun, which then crashed into the center divider and overturned. The Mitsubishi also struck a third auto, which was then hit by the truck, according to the accident report. Price said the truck then drove away.

Five people suffered minor injuries in the accident, he said. Two were taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills; the three others told officers they would seek medical treatment on their own.

The CHP closed the northbound lanes for 45 minutes after the accident. Several lanes remained closed for another three hours.

Police had no further description of the truck and said witnesses were unable to get a license plate number.
