Cubs Sign Outfielder Merced
The Chicago Cubs signed outfielder Orlando Merced, a left-handed batter, and also recalled outfielder Matt Mieske from triple-A Iowa.
Merced began the season with the Minnesota Twins but was traded July 31 to the Boston Red Sox, who released him a month later. He hit .277 with five homers and 33 RBIs with the two teams.
Merced was hitless in nine at-bats with Boston.
Mieske batted .255 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in 35 games at Iowa. He opened the season with the Cubs, hitting .308 with one homer and 10 RBIs.
