Sluman’s Big Third Round Gives Him a Share of Lead

Jeff Sluman, seeking his first victory since early last year, shot an eight-under-par 63 on Saturday for a share of the third-round lead with Chris Perry in the Greater Milwaukee Open.

Sluman and Perry, winless on the PGA Tour, headed into today’s final round at 16-under 197, leading a group of 14 players within six strokes of the lead. Perry followed Friday’s 62 with a 67.

Sluman’s last victory was the 1997 Tucson Chrysler Classic. Prior to that, he won the 1988 PGA Championship.

Defending champion Isao Aoki shot a four-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead over Leonard Thompson after the second round of the Senior PGA Emerald Coast Classic at Milton, Fla.

This is the tournament where the Japanese star shot a tour-record 10-under 60 last year, also in the second round at The Moors Golf Club. He finished with at 14-under 196, a tournament record.

This year, he opened with 65 en route to a nine-under 131 total.

Australia’s David Graham, who withdrew on the fifth hole Friday after experiencing chest pain, was released from a Pensacola hospital after doctors determined he had not suffered a heart attack.

Danielle Ammaccapane shot a five-under-par 67 to take a three-stroke lead and set a 36-hole record of 12-under 132 at the Safeway LPGA Golf Championship in Portland, Ore.

Emilee Klein, looking for her first LPGA Tour victory since winning twice in 1996, matched Ammaccapane’s 67 for a 135 total.

Sweden’s Patrik Sjoland shot a nine-under 62 on a soggy course and increased his lead to four strokes in the European Masters at Crans-sur-sierre, Switzerland. . . . Taiwan’s Tseng Hsiu-feng shot a one-under 70 and took a two-stroke lead at 138 after two rounds of the $448,000 Fujisankei Ladies Classic at Kawaguchiko, Japan. . . . Shinichi Yokota and Katsunori Kuwabara advanced to the final of the Japan PGA Matchplay Championship Promise Cup at Tomakomai, Japan, with easy victories. The winner of today’s 36-hole final will earn $223,600 from a purse of $746,000.
