Seniors from across Ventura County are invited to sign up for the third annual Moorpark Senior Games by Sept. 18.
The free event, scheduled Oct. 7 to 30, is open to all county seniors 55 and older.
Moorpark Mayor Pat Hunter will declare the games open at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 during a ceremony at the City Council meeting at 799 Moorpark Ave. A reception will follow at the adjacent senior center.
The games will include basketball, bowling, bridge, checkers, cribbage, croquet, darts, golf and horseshoes. Participants may also play poker, pool or boccie ball.
While many events will be held at the senior center, some will take place at other locations including Poindexter Park. More than 400 seniors from eight cities competed last year, and organizers hope even more will participate this year.
“It really is a lot of fun,” said Carol Ghens, senior center coordinator. “All of the participants have enjoyed the games the last two years.” The games, she said, were designed to bring seniors together for light competition. They also allow seniors to renew old friendships and make new ones.
The event will conclude Oct. 30 with a free barbecue and awards ceremony at Poindexter Park. For more information, call 529-6864, Ext. 261.
