Attebery Provides Northridge Victory

Kari Attebery, a senior defender with one goal in her college career, scored what proved to be the winning goal Wednesday as the Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 3-2, in a nonconference game at North Campus Stadium.
Attebery, from Ventura High, blasted a 50-yard shot that deflected off a defender and bounced high over Rebel goalkeeper Shannon Wilson and into the net. The goal, with nine minutes remaining, gave the Matadors (2-4) a 3-1 lead. Nevada Las Vegas (3-2) scored with five minutes to play.
Despite seeing his team win consecutive games for the first time since 1995, Northridge Coach Brian Wiesner was not pleased with the Matadors’ performance.
“We allowed some foolish goals and gave too many balls away but we did enough to win,” Wiesner said. “We got up and then we panicked and made unforced errors.”
Northridge took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Debbie Smith and a 2-1 advantage when Joanna Parker scored on a header in the 76th minute.
