Maybe Elvis Didn’t Like White Jumpsuit

Would Mike Shanahan actually order one of his players to throw a ball . . . well, in the direction of Raider owner Al Davis?

Legend has it this happened on Sept. 5, 1994. Elvis Grbac, now with Kansas City, told the New York Times that the Denver Broncos’ coach, then the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator, suggested he take a shot at Davis on the sideline during pregame warmups at Candlestick Park. Shanahan had been fired as head coach of the Raiders by Davis four games into the 1989 season.

Elvis was on target, he said, but Davis ducked.

The topic resurfaced on a conference call with Shanahan this week. Shanahan chuckled and replied sarcastically, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I’m sure Elvis must have gotten me confused with another person,” Shanahan said. “You guys know me too well. I would never do anything like that.”

Hayes in the Woods: You can make flight reservations on the Internet, order books and records and now you can even buy a log cabin once owned by the late Woody Hayes, the former Ohio State football coach.

On Oct. 2, there will be an auction on the Internet for the cabin. There are small details in the cabin that will delight the most avid Ohio State fan--a bathroom with a gray bathtub and a scarlet sink, a red and white rug with a large No. 1 is at the foot of a leather armchair near the fireplace, and there are two scarlet and gray lawn chairs with the initial H on them.

Proceeds from the sale of the cabin will be used to establish a scholarship fund at the university in the name of Hayes’ wife, Anne, who died in January.

Double threat: Golfer Tammie Green, who is six months pregnant, has no problem with curtailing her playing time in the Solheim Cup, the women’s version of the Ryder Cup, which starts today in Dublin, Ohio. She will play no more than 18 holes a day, and maybe none on some days.

“In fact, I think everybody else will be kind of hoping they only get to play 18 a day,” said Green, whose restriction was ordered by team captain Judy Rankin. “This is a tough course to walk.”

The 38-year-old Green isn’t always sure how much she weighs.

“My weight shifts a little bit now and then, depending on what side the baby’s on,” she said. “It’s a little different, but I’ve been playing well.”
