Buena High’s defense recorded six sacks and receiver Cody Murphy provided a spark on offense by throwing a touchdown pass as the Bulldogs defeated their former Channel League rivals, 17-8, in a nonleague game Friday night at Rio Mesa.

The Bulldogs (1-1) opened the scoring when Murphy connected with Daniel Allen from 25 yards out with 7:24 remaining in the second quarter. It was the second week in a row Murphy has thrown for a touchdown on a double pass.

Buena linebacker Justin Vaughn recorded two sacks on Rio Mesa’s next possession, including one of 12 yards on a fake punt that set up Buena’s second touchdown, a four-yard run by D.J. Blackledge.
