SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Chris Hutton and Jason Brown combined for 295 yards in 31 carries and accounted for all of Savanna’s points in a 31-3 victory over host Sonora in nonleague game at La Habra Stadium Friday night.

Savanna took the opening kickoff and held the ball for almost half the first quarter, engineering a 73-yard touchdown drive. Brown accounted for 55 yards on the first drive and scored from seven yards, giving the Rebels a 6-0 lead.

The only flaw in the Savanna’s attack was two-point conversion attempts, which failed four times.

“We had no trouble with 40 yard gains but couldn’t score on those two-yarders,” Savanna Coach Fred Di Palma joked after the game.

Four turnovers hampered Sonora, the first an interception by Ryan Del Rosario to end the Raiders’ first drive. Del Rosario finished the game on crutches, more as a precautionary measure, according to Di Palma, following an injury to his right leg in the second quarter.

Sonora had an opportunity to score early in the second quarter, driving to the Savanna four-yard line before a fumble ended the drive.

Hutton scored his first of three touchdowns on the ensuing drive from seven yards out, setting up the score with a 45-yard run.

After 21 consecutive running plays, Savanna went to the air with Robin Dano hitting Hutton with a 43-yard touchdown pass with one minute 41 seconds left in the first half.

Nick Ross hit a 37-yard field goal on the final play of the half, cutting Savanna’s lead to 18-3.

Hutton scored with 10:28 left in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard touchdown run, increasing Savanna’s lead to 24-3.

He set up the final Savanna touchdown with a 10-yard interception return to the Sonora 48. Brown capped off the scoring with a 47-yard touchdown run.
