It’s All in the Family for Hoffman Brothers

Dodger Manager Glenn Hoffman acknowledges he’s biased concerning the National League Cy Young Award.

Regardless, Hoffman believes that his younger brother, Trevor, deserves the award. Glenn said that Trevor, the San Diego Padres’ all-star closer, has made the biggest impact in the league this season.

“He makes it an eight-inning game, and I can tell you as a manager that that’s comforting to know,” Hoffman said. “It gives a lot of confidence to your starting pitchers because they know that, most of the time anyway, their games are secure when Trevor comes in.”

Hoffman leads the NL with 51 saves in 52 opportunities. He is 4-2 with a 1.53 earned-run average, and has 85 strikeouts in 70 2/3 innings. The Padres clinched the NL West championship Sept. 12.

“There are a lot of deserving guys,” Hoffman said. “[Padre starter] Kevin Brown and [Atlanta’s] Tom Glavine have also been great, but I think Trevor’s numbers, and what he’s done for his team, make the difference.”

Third baseman Bobby Bonilla won’t play for the remainder of the season because he began his off-season rehabilitation program early.

Bonilla, who underwent wrist and Achilles’ tendon surgery last off-season, began his daily exercise regimen Tuesday at Dodger Stadium. Bonilla is expected to meet with an orthopedic specialist this week to determine when he can begin jogging.

Outfielder Raul Mondesi is concerned about his family in the Dominican Republic in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Georges.

“I talked to my family [Tuesday], and it’s bad, real bad,” Mondesi said. “My house is fine, but the house next door to me is gone. It was just blown away, and another house close to mine also [was destroyed]. My family is OK now, but this isn’t good.”

As expected, Darren Dreifort won’t pitch again this season, club officials said. The first-year starter has a sore throwing shoulder, and the Dodgers don’t want to risk having Dreifort pitch with nothing at stake. Dreifort finished the season 8-12 with a 4.00 ERA, striking out 168 in 180 innings. . . . Right-hander Dave Mlicki is expected to start Thursday. Mlicki was forced to leave in the sixth inning in his most recent start after experiencing back spasms, but Mlicki said he felt fine after throwing in the bullpen Tuesday.

* Update--Bohanon, who is 5-6 with a 2.34 earned-run average in 13 starts with the Dodgers, has been the club’s most consistent starter since he was acquired from the New York Mets on July 10. He has pitched at least six innings in his last 11 outings, and at least seven innings in eight of 11 appearances. Moreover, he has given up two earned runs or less 10 times. “The thing I feel good about is that I’ve gone out there and given the team innings, pretty much every start,” Bohanon said. “I haven’t always won, but I’ve gotten us into the seventh and eighth a lot.”
