Watch the Furniture When Lees Get Together

The family that plays together stays together.

Kristin, Jason and Stacey Lee have made volleyball the reason for several family get-togethers.

Kristin, the oldest, is a senior at Pepperdine; Jason is a junior at Loyola Marymount; Stacey is a junior at Westlake High and is the last of the Lees to play for the Warriors.

Get them under one roof and you have a lot of kills, digs and aces. And a broken china cabinet.

Jason and Stacey were playing volleyball in their mother’s living room a couple years ago and cracked the glass door on a china cabinet.

“We blamed it on an earthquake,” Stacey said.

They couldn’t blame their defense; all three Lees have the innate ability to keep the ball from the floor.

Kristin recorded 20 digs against Virginia, the most in a match this season for a Pepperdine player, and Jason finished third in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 2.49 digs per game last season.

Stacey was a key defensive player for Westlake during the Warriors’ run to the Southern Section Division II-A championship last year.

Looks like the Lees can play defense . . . as long as they don’t do it in the house.

The Eagles haven’t landed.

Chaminade is off to a 4-0 start, including a sweep of Granada Hills, one of the best City Section teams.

The fast start has been provided by Abby Hedgepeth and Delaney Menell, as well as a familiar name within the local softball community . . . Maureen LeCocq.

LeCocq, the Times’ regional pitcher of the year last season, is the starting opposite hitter for the Eagles after playing two seasons on the junior varsity team.

“She comes from a very high, competitive level [in softball] and has carried that over to volleyball,” Chaminade Coach Marla O’Hara said. “It really catapults her.”

The team is helped, too, although the Eagles have challenges ahead. Mission League play begins in less than two weeks, which means upcoming matches against Harvard-Westlake and Flintridge Sacred Heart.

“I think we can upset some teams,” O’Hara said. “I just need to make sure the girls think they can.”

Two middle blockers from the area are taking charge on a pair of ranked college teams.

Jenn Detmer, from Thousand Oaks High, delivered a career-high 23 kills for Stanford, ranked No. 7, against USC on Saturday.

Detmer, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, had eight blocks in a victory over UCLA on Sunday and is averaging 1.73 blocks per game, seventh-best in the nation.

“My confidence definitely increased over the weekend,” said Detmer, who saw limited time last season behind two senior middle blockers.

“Last year was all about growing up and getting better. I was totally happy with that. I didn’t expect to play at all.”

Former Hart middle blocker Candace Boller, a redshirt freshman at Loyola Marymount, was selected the West Coast Conference player of the week last week. The 6-foot Boller totaled 36 kills and 11 blocks in three matches of the LMU tournament.
