Milutinovic Debuts With Shootout Win

Tab Ramos, Myles Joseph, Mike Duhaney and Mike Sorber scored shootout goals to give the New York-New Jersey MetroStars a 1-0 Major League Soccer victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday night before 24,763 at Foxboro, Mass.

The MetroStars, playing for the first time under Coach Bora Milutinovic, ended a six-game losing streak to finish the regular season 15-17. Milutinovic, the former U.S. national team coach who directed Nigeria in the 1998 World Cup, took over for Alfonso Mondelo last Monday.

New York-New Jersey will open the playoffs Wednesday at Columbus.

Imad Baba and Mike Burns scored shootout goals for New England, which finished an MLS-worst 12-20.

Colorado 3, Dallas 1--Marcelo Balboa scored two goals and had a assist in front of 15,022 at Denver as the Rapids ended the regular season with a team-record 16 victories.

Balboa scored 68 seconds into the match with a header off a corner kick, and added his second goal in the 16th minute on assists from Waldir and David Vaudreuil. Balboa assisted on Waldir’s goal in the 32nd minute.

Jorge Rodriguez scored for Dallas in the 57th minute.

Both teams open play in the Western Conference playoffs Thursday. Colorado (16-16) meets Chicago, and Dallas (15-17) faces the Galaxy at the Rose Bowl.
