Palisades’ Estavan Is City’s Top Player

Leilani Estavan, a senior point guard who helped lead Palisades to its first City championship in girls’ basketball, was selected City player of the year.

Palisades forward Nicole Funn also was named to the first team.

North Hollywood also had two players named to the first team--Markia Derby and Tashean Thomas.

Other All-City selections: Candice Baldwin (Banning); Cara Blumfield (Woodland Hills El Camino Real); Patrice Davidson (Locke); Ebony Hoffman (Harbor City Narbonne); Kai Ito (Venice); Shanell Law (Washington); Tiffany McCollum (San Pedro); Tiesha Maddox (South Gate); Michelle Tompkins (Fairfax); Tiffany Williams (Westchester).

Estavan and Hoffman also were named to the All-State team by Cal-Hi Sports.

James Wright of Manual Arts, Joe Shipp of Fairfax and Gilbert Arenas of Van Nuys Grant were named to All-State boys’ team.

Jeff Soll, who led El Camino Real to the boys’ soccer championship, was selected City player of the year.

Sagario Hernandez of Roosevelt and Dawnell Nishijima of Gardena won the 70- and 78-kilogram divisions at the national high school judo championships last weekend in Denver.

A football all-star game pitting the best seniors from the City Section against the best from Southern Section schools in Los Angeles County will be played June 19 at Santa Monica College.
