Irvine Upsets No. 1 49ers
UC Irvine upset Long Beach State, the top-ranked team in the nation, 15-11, 15-9, 15-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Wednesday at Irvine. It is only the second time Irvine has defeated Long Beach.
Donnie Rafter had 26 kills and Erick Helenihi and Mike Rupp each had 19 kills for Irvine (12-8, 9-6 in conference). Setter Corey Hinkle had 81 assists for 13th-ranked Irvine.
Dave McKienzie had 21 kills and Jim Polster had 18 for Long Beach (17-2, 14-2).
In nonconference baseball:
Southern California College 13, Hastings (Neb.) 9--Jason Murrietta had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for host SCC (14-17).
In nonconference softball:
Cal State Fullerton 11-12, Harvard 2-3 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Stephenie Little hit her 13th home run of the season in the second game for Fullerton (21-14).
